From the Roanoke River to the Jackson River and beyond, the Roanoke Valley Chapter of Trout Unlimited brings people together to care for and recover their waters through local conservation and community science projects. We are making our trout and small mouth populations stronger, our water cleaner, and our communities healthier.

A LOCAL COMMUNITY OF CONSERVATIONISTS!
When you take part in Roanoke Valley TU Chapter activities, you are helping drive conservation of Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia rivers and streams. The same rivers that sustain trout and other fish bring clean water into our homes, give life to vibrant communities, and feed a passion for the outdoors.
Our rivers and our fisheries face enormous challenges. At Trout Unlimited, we are doing something about it.
Working together as volunteers and with TU staff and partners in our Priority Waters, we advocate for our rivers, restore our stream habitat, plant native trees, help connect kids to the outdoors and so much more.
We are a community of optimists who have a ton of fun along the way. Whether you are passionate about wild and native fish, inspired by the wonder of our rivers, or dedicated to clean water, we invite you to be a part of our mission. Be a champion for the rivers we all love and help us unlock the unlimited power of conservation.
UPCOMING EVENTS:
First Tuesday and Third Thursday of each month – 6:00 pm – Vinton VFW hall – Volunteers will be assisting Project Healing Waters participants tie flies
Last Friday of each month – 4:30 – 7:30 – Solstice Farm Brewing; Catawba, VA – Fly Fishing Friday – Come out for some beverages, fish tales, fly tying and lawn trout fishing. Tips that night will be donated to Trout in the Classroom program
August 18, 2026 – 6:00 pm – Ladies of TU Night –Safeside Tactical in Roanoke. We will be combining our event with Project Healing Waters meeting – Michael Lawler Smith from Native Fish Coalition will have a presentation, door prizes and raffle prizes (loaded fly boxes, Orvis rod and real, trout prints and lots more)
September 14 – 18, 2026 – TIC coordinators {VOLUNTEERS NEEDED, no experience necessary. Reach out to John Loope (JDLoope@aol.com) if interested} will be working with participating schools to get tanks set up and ready for egg delivery
September 17, 2026 – 6:00 pm – Heights Community Church – Brian from Mossy Creek Fly Shop presentation on hatch charts
September 26, 2026 – 9:00 am – Stocking access maintenance along Colorado Street Delayed Harvest section of Roanoke River. Meet in parking area at Colorado Street Bridge. Meet at the parking lot below Colorado Street Bridge around 9:00 am. Bring boots, waders, gloves, loppers and manual pole saws if you have them. We can get a group of 6-8 people it should not take more than a couple of hours. If time allows may also work on Green Hill Park stocking access as well. Please let Lawrence (RoanokeTUP@gmail.com) and me (Roanoke Valley TU VP@gmail.com) know if you can help us out.
September 19, October 10 or October 24 – Stream Survey workday. Time and meeting place to be determined. On one or two of these days a team of at least 3 will work together to assess stream crossings for aquatic organism passage. The information is then shared with the National Forest Service, Army Corps of Engineers and Department of Wildlife Resources to assist them in decisions regarding use of funds for crossing upgrades. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED, no experience necessary. Reach out to David Johnson at (johnsodhogz@gmail.com) if you are available one of these days.
October 25th – Chapter fishing trip to Escatawba Farms (7 slots available on a first come, first serve basis)
First week of October – Coordinators deliver eggs and food to the participating schools
First or second week of October – Assisting DWR with stocking the delayed harvest sections of the Roanoke River within Green Hill Park and along the greenway between Colorado Street bridge and Apperson Drive bridge. Volunteers are welcome, we begin at the bottom parking lot (right as you enter the park) around 9:00 am. Bring waders or muck boots if you have them.
October 15, 2026 – 6:00 pm – Heights Community Church – George Palmer with Dept. Wildlife Resources presentation on Smith River fishing impacts from turbine coming online and changes proposed to regulations and stocking program
October 22, 2026 – Orvis movie night – Chapter has been invited to set up a table at their store downtown
